The Tube Chair was the first modular and arrangeable armchair which, today, still boasts undying modernity and strength. Between an armchair, chaise longue and sofa, a design object and authentic reflection of a lifestyle, Tube Chair defies time with its iconic and changeable look.Tube Chair is the perfect example of Joe Colombo’s style, characterised by an innovative, futuristic and almost utopian approach. One of the focuses of his work is research into modular and flexible systems which offer a multi-functional solution to the user. The design was created as a whole, capable of reuniting aesthetic dimensions with practices, serving an object.The Tube Chair armchair is technically ground-breaking. It’s composed of four PVC tubes with different diameters, covered with foam. The tubes are easily assembled together with metal hooks. They’re interchangeable to fit needs, adopting various positions: the user can move them and set them up as they like, as a low armchair, a tall armchair, a chaise longue, daybed or separate footstools… Tube Chair opens up the possibilities of more than 16 different configurations! Completely de-structured, Tube Chair innovates with its proposal of a new way of sitting down, snuggling in, and chilling out…The hollow tubes are set into one another, like nesting elements. The four nested tubes have always been sold slotted into one another, compact and stored in a canvas bag, so that they can easily be transported and assembled were required or desired. An innovation for that time!To make the Tube Chair, Colombo used the new possibilities created through PVC and the plastic-moulding process. The designer was a precursor in the field of use for this technique, and more generally in the use of various new “plastics” which were emerging at the time.
